Hentucky Breaks - The GM Experience

Mixed by Kingpin

Directors Commentary - Ivan Madeira

Hentucky Breaks - The GM Experience - Introduction

This is the second mixtape to come from the Hentucky Breaks stable, as mixed by myself Kingpin/Ivan Madeira. This CD is a lil' different from the first mix, Hentucky Breaks - Hentucky Breaks. I've gone for a more hip/glitch hop, funk and Indie feel, this time round. The way I've organised this CD, is that it's broken into four main sections. Each section builds up progressively in terms of tempo and pace of the songs. So it starts of quite laid back, maybe a few bass heavy tracks thrown in between, but it leads into a more fast paced mixtape. The style of mixing used will vary from tracks being mixed and 'rode' together, to short burst mixing and even some just being stopped and dropped; with some minor scratching thrown for good measure.

Overall it's just about playing tracks that I'm into, with some you may know, and some you don't. You may like some of the tracks or you may not. But at the end of the day it's all about good music. You may also see multiple tracks cropping up from the same producer. In this mixtapes case, I've used artist like RJD2 and Shadow's productions as bridge tracks. This basically is a track (usually an instrumental) used to help retain continuity in the mix, and fills in parts of the mix, which needs an instrumental to help break it all up. Instead of using really drab instruments, I went for some proper artists like DJ Shadow, RJD2, Mr Scruff, who make top quality tracks. As I wanted to keep the mix lively I didn't particular let the basic instrumentals ride unless they had a lot going on, as I wanted to keep the mix interesting... Well that's what I was going for anyway.

Below I've decided to go for a directors commentary style review, onto why I used each particular tracks in this mix, and just some information on some of the artists (which may not be that well known). Also on this mixtape is a person edit of one of my friend's track. The song in question is by Goatlab. I personalised this track, by just rearranging parts of the tune and re-editing sections to suit the feel of the tape.

At the end of the day it's all about spreading the Hentucky word (deary me, power speech time) and not about trying to make a buck (that's why dealing crack to the kids is a much better source of income)....(*joking* By the way, before I get the FBI, CIA, M15 and Brixton Police station at my door with an MP5 pointed at my head during the middle of the night).

Shout Outs

Just want to give shouts out to, the SJC, SFX south london blah blah blah massive (in a Hertfordshire-cum-South London twang). But seriously big up all them guys, all my people from Brunel, good luck to everyone still there (poor sods), to the Showboaters, keep on losing those games lads. Shouts to Soundklash.net for recommending such good music, constantly, and to all the bands, DJs and whoever I've seen this past year. If it wasn't for that Smirnoff Experience night with Freestylers (live) and Scratch Perverts at the Academy at March 2004, then Hentucky Breaks might have never happened. Well that and Johnny C and Maria's help at Matecana. Also thanks to EVERYONE who has supported HentuckyBreaks, from Jamie @ Nakedintruder for designing this website, to all my friends coming down to give support to the night. And of course the performers and staff on the night, they made it all happen. Final shout to TCT, I hope Hentuckybreaks have helped and will continue to help your grand cause for more years to come. Hold tight for the live GM Experience tour, coming.... well when I get myself into gear....Get lucky with Hentucky (oh smooth).

Ivan Madeira - Kingpin

01.) Hentucky Breaks - The GM Experience Intro - Hewhawformers

Hee Haw Brayks & Cartoon Breaks

I always try and start of my mixes with a little intro, usually something with a bit of humour. So I went for the cartoon samples again (like in the first CD), and mixed it over a tough beat. It's just a bit of a laugh, and it's also something a bit personal to the mix.

02.) The pixies - where is my mind

Taken from the album
The Pixies - Surfa Rosa
Label: 4ad

I've only gotten into the Pixies in the last year. I never read NME so have never heard the NME 'nob' sucking going on about how 'great' the Pixies are, and as I've only gotten into Alt/Indie/Bands based music in the past 4 years this band has gotten past me. But however, after seeing them live at T in the Park, and caining their albums, I am now a Pixies fan (without the aid of some twatty music journalism telling me I have to love their style). This, Monkey Goes to Heaven and Debaser are my three favourite Pixies songs, but after buying Monkey on vinyl, it seemed that Where is my Mind? Was more appropriate to put into this mixtape. As the tunes used where quite similar tempo, and the beat was quite sparse which would mix well over a hip hop track.

03.) DJ shadow - Treach Battle Beat

Taken from the single
DJ Shadow - You Can't go Home again
Label: Island/MoWax

This song can be found with scratching samples on the Private Press. But I first heard about this track when I randomly bought this song, (it had Shadow on it, and was only £3, so you know you've got a bargain there anyway). It's just a plain dirty hip hop/battle beat just itching to get scratched (oh how cheesy). I only done a couple of bars of scratch over the top off this, as this was mainly used as a bridge track for The Pixies and Reel People.

04.) Reel people - Run away

Taken from the album
Reel People - Second Guess
Label: Papa Records

Reel people are a group from West London. I first heard about them from the Soundklash.net forum, and thought I'd check them out. Got their album which is a mix off Broken Beat, Hip Hop, Neo-Soul and just other bits and bobs, and I was just so impressed. I put one of their tracks on the last CD, but really wanted to fit this track on somewhere, as it was my favourite of the album. Unfortunately it was too slow to put, but fitted perfectly in this mixtape, and I think it sounds good mixed in with DJ Shadow.

05.) DJ shadow - Midnight In a Perfect World

Taken from the album
DJ Shadow - Entroducing
Label: Universial/MoWax

Shadow again?!? I don't really have that many tracks of the 80ish-BPM range, but it seems Shadow loves to produce at that tempo. This is one of my favourites from Entroducing, as it mixes up a solid beat over a haunting melody.

06.) RJD2 - Get of my Spaceship bitch

Taken from the Single
RJD2 - Exotic Talk
Label: Definitive Jux

Now we come into the next section of the mix. This is one my favourite RJD2 tracks, and carries off from Midnight In a Perfect World, as it's a similarly laid out track. Though everything in this is bigger! With an absolutely loud and proud beat and loads of sweeping 80s style electronica instruments laid on top this track needs more exposure (as it's a B-side single and not off any of his albums.)

07.) Mr scruff - Travelogue

Taken from the album
Mr Scruff - Keep it Unreal
Label: Ninja Tune

To contrast Get of My Spaceship Bitch's almost orchestral loudness, I went for something quite sparse to ride over it for a little bit. This track was perfect for it and was great for bridging The Zutons track

08.) The Zutons - Pressure point

Taken from the album
The Zutons - Who Killed the Zutons?
Label:Deltasonic

This track was a bitch to mix, is all I can say! I hate mixing with 7 inches, they are a pain, coupled with the fact this track is live you gotta be on the ball with this one. But still I had to include this track, as it's my favourite track of their album. When I use to listen to this I thought it would sound great over a Hip Hop style beat, and I thought it came off well in the mix. I love this band as they bring a bit of folk/blues with a modern edge. The whole album may not be to everyone's taste (I love it personally), but this track is one of the most accessible of the album.

09.) RJD2 - Fuck the Soundcheck

Taken from the album
RJD2 - In Rare Form - Unreleased Instrumentals
Label:Bustown Pride

This is taken from RJD2's unreleased instrumentals album, which is perfect for bridging tracks in this mix. This track was your strong, typical big horns hip hop instrumental, and sounded perfect to mix the Zutons out with. I like this track on it's own, and with a decent MC could be a club banger (without sounding to try hard).

10.) Murs - 3:16

Taken from the album
Murs - 3:16 (9th Edition)
Label: Definitive Jux

One of my favourite Hip Hop albums of the year had to get dropped in this tape. This is one my favourite tracks of the album, and again one of the more accessible ones. It had the right tempo to mix into Fuck the Soundcheck so I went for it, even though I love Animals, or Who's the bad Man? Murs is a great rapper with an excellent producer behind him (9th wonder). Listen to his lyrics though, he doesn't chat breeze.

11.) Goldie Lookin' Chain - Half Man Half Machine (Instrumental)

Taken from the single
Goldie Lookin' Chain - Half Man Half Machine/Self Suicide
Label: Must Destroy

I was mighty sceptical of the GLC at first. Was at a festival, and my friend recommended that we should go and see them. Now I've read a lot about them for ages now, and heard they aren't too dissimilar to MC Pitman, whom I'm not a fan off. But anyway when I saw them live I was converted. They are a great NOVELTY act. Yes Novelty! people (some people take them seriously or actually get into their rapping and think that they are bloody good). They are a bunch of lads from Newport just having a laugh. So I decided I'd chuck in the instrumental of Half Man Half machine with a little twist in for good measure.

12.) Joy division - Love will tear us apart

Taken from the single
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Label: Factory Records

To end of the second section of the tape I decided to play it out with Joy Division Love will Tear Us Apart. This is not my favourite mix of it (its the more punkier/harder New Wave version on the B-Side of the 7" single which I love best), but it was the best mix (and is a mighty fine track anyway) to put on the tape. This was the last tune to be played at Hentucky Breaks - GM Experience club night, and when it was dropped my Genocide I was in heaven (elevated by the amount of alcohol in my blood stream I must add). I've been caining this track all year and it had to go on the tape.

13.) Wang Chun - dance hall days

Taken from the album
Wang Chung - Points on the Curve
Label:Universal IMS

To start of the penultimate section, I thought I'd go with a bit of 80s pop. I remember hearing this track in Bachelor Party (staring Tom Hanks pre-wanky-phase), and watching Tom Hanks doing his Mash Potato dance to it always raises a smile. You got to have some 80s in a Hentucky mix though... STANDARD.

14.) Keno-1 & The Hermit - Heavy Heavy

Taken from the single
Keno-1 & The Hermit- Heavy Heavy/The Hardest Rain
Label: Breaking Bread
Website: Breakinbread.org

I first heard this track in Mr Bongos record shop(RIP) in Soho. I just wanted to pick up a track, but ended up picking up around 4 more on top. The guy put it on, and instantly I wanted it. It's a proper big boy track, and thought it would contrast well with the 80s soft electronic pop of Dance Hall Days. It's a harsh track though, which would mash up any club, throw in a little scratching and some B-Boys and you have a good night. And apparently this goes down often at the Breaking Bread nights (check their website for more details!). This track is fecking Heavy in all senses of the word.

15.) Mr Scruff - Spandex Man

Taken from the album
Mr Scruff - Keep it Unreal
Label:Ninja Tune

One of my favourite tracks by Mr Scruff was the optimum choice for mixing into Heavy Heavy. I wanted to keep this section banging with tune after tune after tune, and this is definitely a track to use to keep the pace up.

16.) RJD2 - 1979

Taken from the album
RJD2 - Since we Last Spoke
Label: Definitive Jux

This is my personal gem from of his latest album. Using Latin music samples over a hip hop beat, this track is pure genius. It's simple, but oh so effect, with little touches thrown throughout.

17.) Colour Climax - Plug It In

Taken from the album
Breaking Bread - The 7 deadly inch sins
Label: Breaking Bread

Website: Breakinbread.org

Another track from the Breaking Bread label gets played. This one from Colour Climax, has the elements of old funk/soul, but mixed in with a hip hop/breaks mentality. Absolutely cracking track with a little bit of scratching thrown in to boot by myself.

18.) Souls of Mischief - 93 til infinity

Taken from the album
Souls of Mischief - 93 til infinity
Label: Blindside

A 100% classic by Souls of Mischief. It's such a chilled track (as proclaimed in the lyrics) but has a nice bottom end going off to give it some presence, essential in any playlist if you can fit it in.

19.) Quantic - We Got Soul? (Rob Life Remix)

Taken from the album
Breaking Bread - The 7 deadly sins
Label: Breaking Bread

Website: Breakinbread.org

This is final track from Breaking Bread label on this mix tape, and shows of the talents of Rob Life. A little hip hop/funk flex going on here, I decided to ride it with Souls of Mischief, creating a mish mash. A definite party track!

20.) Gary Byrd and the Experience - The crown

Taken from the single
Gary Byrd and the GB Experience - The Crown
Label: Motown Records

I first heard this track in sampled form from Grant Nelson, as he made a bumpy H&G track from sampling the main hook of the track. Gary Byrds back to basics good time rapping is shown off here with the production talents of Mr Stevie Wonder helping out, this is a post disco/early hip hop classic. One for the B-Boys & B-Girls.

21.) Atmosphere - Trying to Find a Balance

Taken from the album
Atmosphere - Seven's Travels
Label: Epitaph

I'm a fan of Atmosphere, but this track just takes the biscuit. I haven't stopped playing this tune for months now, it just always sounds fresh. I couldn't find a specific place to put this in the mix, but I had to have it in anyway, so stopped and dropped this one in. It had to get the full play from it, as this man doesn't hold back on the track. Also check out the Lucy Ford EP for more Atmosphere action.

22.) Goatlab - Relaxation for Space (Kingpin's Hentucky edit)

Produced by Goatlab
Exclusive Remix by Kingpin for Hentucky Breaks. Only available on Hentucky Breaks - The GM Experience.

We now start of the final section of the tape with a person re-edit of Goatlab's track. I use to produce back in 1999-2001, but took a break when I went to Uni. But now I've left Uni, I've hooked up with a friend, and we have started to make some tracks together. This track was done by my friend on his own though, and he has to get all the credit for this track, I just done a personal Hentucky Edit of this track, just by rearranging vocals, adding some SFX and chopping up some bits and pieces to make it fit onto this mixtape. We where hoping to get another track on the tape which we both done together, but didn't get it finished in time, which is a pity. But this track will suffice, and am a big fan of this track. It's in the Postal Service vein, in terms of style, to just get an idea. If you don't know who the Postal Service are, well all I can describe it as electronic music with Indie style vocals (sounds crap but it's great I tell thee). With it's intro of the man telling you to relax, it's definitely the ideal track to start of the final section of the tape with.

23.) UNKLE featuring Ian Brown - Reign (Evil 9 remix)

Taken from the single
UNKLE featuring Ian Brown - Reign (Evil 9 remix)
Label: Global Underground

After seeing Ian Brown at Fabric not so long ago, I felt the need to add him into the mixtape. I would have put on Happy Ever After on it as I love that song, but I was lacking a few 140ish BPM tracks on the mix for the final section. I heard that Reign had come out with an Evil 9 remix, and I gotten a few bits and pieces from Evil, so I thought why not. It fitted in well with Relaxed for Space, so in it went.

24.) Renegade Soundwave - The Phantom

Taken from the album
Renegade Soundwave - Soundclash
Label: Mute US

I use to be well into my hardcore/breakbeat/acid house etc. (still am just haven't listened to many tunes in a while like I use to). I always try to include at least one hardcore track (or from that era) on my mixtape, and it was a toss up between LFO - LFO or Renegade. Had to be Renegade as it was sparser in the beats, and had a less bass bin crunching sound, which was ideal for the tape. I just love how the bassline drops, mixed in with the tribal chants over the top! A classic which always destroys a rave.

25.) Super Furry Animals - The Man Don't Give a Fuck

Taken from the album
Super Furry Animals - Songbook: The Singles - Volume 1
Label: Sony/Epic

Not my favourite Furries track, but is one of their anthems, which always tears up their gigs. Personally I think No Sympathy is their best work, just pure insanity on the buttons there (must have hot boxed their studio hard when making that). But this track just suited the vibe and had to be dropped. It's a great track regardless, and well imaging seeing this on Top of the Pops? (Nah can't imagine it either).

26.) Lovestation - Teardrops (Flava Mix)

Taken from the album
Lovestation - Soulstation
Label: Fresh

What a great cover of the Womack and Womack classic. It's quite poppy really, with the old skool samples going off, but it's a solid track, that is well put together. I almost forgotten about this tune until I saw it in a record shop. Definitely one to sing along too when you have a couple of Wife Beaters down you. (oi oi Caesars /Bon Bonnies crew).

27.) Interpol - Evil

Taken from the album
Interpol - Antics
Label: Matador

You wouldn't be half wrong if you confused Paul Banks (lead vocalist) with Ian Curtis from Joy Division. Blatantly inspired by them, but I feel that they aren't as dark as Joy Division. My favourite track of their new album, is almost a feel good anthem. You can imagine being in a club with your mates in a big "arms locked round each others shoulders" dance. I thought it would be good to put near the end of the tape to end it on a high.

28.) Eric B and Rakim - Know the ledge (Juice)

Taken from the album
Eric B. & Rakim - Don't Sweat The Technique
Label: MCA
And also available on
Various Artists - Juice: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Label: MCA

Coming to the end of the tape, I realised I forgot a classic. After hearing this dropped by Jazzy Jeff at Fabric, I needed it on the tape. I could have dropped it elsewhere, but I wanted to put it near the end to keep sustain the energy of Evil. Such a tune from a classic film, Juice. "Riverside Motherfucker!"

29.) Peter Cetera - The Glory of Love (Fight for your Honour)

Taken from
Various Artists - Karate Kid Part 2 Soundtrack
Label: Polygram

I always like to end my mix tape on a high, and with the last 2 energy filled tracks I carried this on. But for the very last track I had to take it down a bit as it's a bit of a builder, in true 80s cheesy power ballad fashion. Taken from the Karate Kid 2 Soundtrack, this is an absolute corker! The video is even more hilarious, just your stereotypical 80s power ballad 'clench your fist and close your eyes to show how passionate you are' style going on.

There we have it. I hope you have enjoyed the mix if you listened to it, or that you will when you get your copy. And I hope that this director's commentary has given you a little incite into why I chose each track and inspires you to check out other tracks/albums from the artists used in this tape. Cheers
