Hentucky Breaks was conceived back in 2004 on the idea of just bringing out a mixtape which had a rather eclectic flavour to it. It then transcended into a club night which came out of pure opportunity. An idea to bring something a little different to represent what Hentucky Breaks was initially about had to be done. Firstly the night was a charity night in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT). Secondly we wanted to bring a varied playlist, which ranged from a live hip hop crew to a house DJ warming up. The night done well, and a few more have followed since. With this though, Hentucky's ideology has evolved and changed. From just being a mix CD and a laugh it has evolved into something more than that. Hentucky could never have been some big "bling bling who got dat diamond ring?" type of affair. That market is catered for already, so after much thought and realisation of what the point of all this was for we finally settled on it's true meaning.
Hentucky Breaks is a source for promoting new talent and causes and just trying to give them a bit of recognition. That's to say we aren't out there to bring out artists who will be number 1 as we have many people out there doing that already. We want to provide a stepping stone for people which they themselves can then decide what the next step will be, from moving up on the ladder or keeping it at an underground cult following type of level. In terms of new talent this can lie from musicians, singer/songwriters, DJs, artists and all you're usual 20something media type pet loves. We are also looking at writers from politics to comedy and travel… as long as it's interesting from whatever perspective then we want to give it a look in. In relation to causes, this is the step that we want to take forward with Hentucky.
We always want to keep an affiliation with TCT going but have now sought after other causes which are out there. There are many organisations out there doing major work, but keeping in line with our ideology we are out there looking for small causes, From helping to raise money for a local community centre in South London to helping a kid from a poor region in South America get a decent education then that's really what it's all about. We want to watch the problem and see its progression, through from its conception right to when the dust settled. Detailing and watching the problem and then getting involved in what way we can, from raising money to raising awareness. Whatever is appropriate is the main thing, and not just throwing money at a problem and not seeing what consequence your involvement has had on the project is our idea.
Whatever the cause, the problem may be then we are all open to ideas, and whatever Hentucky can do we will do. From having a laugh with our nights and articles to having a serious side as well is what Hentucky Breaks has now become.
