Following the Turkish invasion of 1974 Cyprus has been divided ethno-politically and geographically between its Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities. This was the outcome of a clash of visions between the two ethnic communities and their respective motherlands. At the international level, Cyprus has attracted the interest of superpowers as it is strategically located. Consequently due to the superpowers involvement the UN, NATO and EU have been concerned. Despite the international interest the Cyprus conflict has produced a stale mate for more than 30 years. The Cyprus problem is a multi-level conflict, consecutively its analysis must include the individual, intra-state groups, state, regional and systemic actors leading to the 1974 conflict. This article addresses the Cyprus conflict and demonstrates that the main causes for its creation were the conflictive bilateral relations of the mother lands and the superpower politics during the early stages of Cold war.
